++           Come celebrate the birthday of Blanche Donahue! This Friday, July 21st from Noon to 3pm in the FISH Community Room. No gifts please. For more info call Janice (Blanche’s daughter) at 541-279-5459.

++           Food on the 4th this Sunday. You may bring food items to donate to FISH Food Bank.

++           Our special giving on Sunday, July 30 will be for Peace with Justice Sunday. Equipping the church to do Justice in Jesus’ Name. Peace with Justice Giving.
In Arizona border towns, communities facing social challenges are dramatically divided. In Liberian villages, citizens’ human rights are being violated. In local U.S. communities, women and girls are being bought and sold against their will. Moved by Christ’s love to pursue reconciliation and peace, honoring the dignity of every individual made in God’s image, The United Methodist Church is unwilling to turn a blind eye to injustice.  Although you, and possibly even your congregation, may lack the resources alone to effect change in a broken world, your giving is vital for the UMC to continue its global ministries of reconciliation. Because of the Peace with Justice Sunday offering, the people of The United Methodist Church are able to make a difference together by sowing seeds—and yielding fruit!—of peace.

++           It’s time to send in news & information for our August newsletter.

Blessings!

++        Special Giving 5th Sunday – April 30th: Today, women represent 70 percent of the world’s population living in poverty and are often underserved by a lack of access to education and training.  The ELCA believes the time has come for a strong, strategic emphasis on supporting and empowering international women leaders in the life and development of the church and society. In supporting International Women Leaders, we are boldly investing in established and emerging women leaders from our global companion churches. Your gifts will help support the education of 200 additional international women through educational seminars, south-to-south exchanges, in-country study programs, and degree programs at ELCA colleges and universities. Make checks to Spirit of Grace. Designate your special offering by checking the box on your giving envelope or writing so on your check.

++        Blessing of Quilts will take place during service this Sunday.

++        The backup for coordinating the Prayer Chain is Donna Fitch (thanks Donna!). If you make a request and don’t hear back from Carol K. in a day, please send the request to Donna at her email address fitcheshr@gmail.com, and she will get that request out to the group.

++        You are invited to celebrate the upcoming August wedding of Anna Stipe and Aaron Eckert at an all-church luncheon shower to be held at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday, May 21 following worship at Spirit of Grace.  A single service will be held that day, beginning at 10:00 a.m., with lunch to follow in the FISH meeting room.

Anna and Aaron moved to Hood River last summer and have been attending Spirit of Grace since then. Anna teaches band at Hood River Middle School.   Aaron is an adjunct music teacher at the Columbia Community College and has substituted in various schools this year including a longer stint at Horizon Christian School. Anna plays bassoon and Aaron is a professional trombone player. Both are involved in local music groups .The couple met in 2009 while enrolled in a music class in college.

The wedding is to take place on August 5th at 4.00p.m at St. Paul‘s Lutheran Church in Peoria, Illinois. This is the church that “grandma attended” and is familiar to both Aaron and Anna’s families. Anna has chosen a lavender theme for her wedding decorations.

We will miss their presence this summer. Aaron will leave Hood River on May 29th and Anna will follow on July 18th – both have studies, family, and arrangements to attend to in the weeks before the wedding. They will be returning to Hood River at the end of the summer to resume teaching positions locally.

At the shower you are invited to contribute to a “Money Tree” which will carry our best wishes to them for long and happy life together. Please bring a card to clip to the tree, and either a plate of sandwiches or a salad to the luncheon. Punch and coffee will be served along with a splendid cake for dessert.

Blessings!

The book for study is Rediscovering the Book of Faith. Pastor Jonette Blakney will be leading our studies. She is from Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church in Stevenson, WA.  Learn how, why, when and where the Old and New Testaments were created; explore how the Bible was put together; and examine the impact of the Reformation on our encounter with scripture. Enjoy dinner Friday night, breakfast and lunch on Saturday, study and quiet time, as well as fellowship and fun! (Schedule is posted on the bulletin board). All this for only $10.00 to cover the cost of the book and supplies. Please let Jennifer in the church office know by Wed March 15th if you plan to attend so we know how many books to order. What is nice about this retreat is that you can come to all, or just some, or even one part of the weekend retreat!  If you need a ride to the retreat, please call Jennifer in the office and we will try to accommodate you.

++         Attention gardeners! The FISH and Spirit of Grace Food Bank Garden is presently seeking volunteers to work in the food bank garden this 2017 season. Located behind the FISH Food Bank on Tucker Rd, we grow our own variety of food justice by producing nearly 2000 lbs of fresh, organic produce for clients at the FISH Food Bank each year. No experience necessary, just bring a pair of gloves (we have extras if you need them!) and be ready to spend some time with the soil. Family friendly and open to all ages, the garden is a great place to learn about vegetables and enjoy all that the growing season has to offer. We will start planting in March and will have lots of opportunities throughout the summer. Contact Susan Randolph at surandolph22@gmail.com for more info. Thanks!
